All items are vintage with varying degrees of age/wear/tarnish, and are guaranteed as represented. This Item: Pair of hand-made polychrome pottery bird/candleholder figures that I believe are of Chinese origin – age unknown, but possibly quite old. Measurement: Birds measure 10″ tall and the bases are approximately 4″ x 3-1/2. Weight: Both together weigh 4 lb. Hallmarks/Stamp: No marks of any kind found. Condition: I’ve taken photos from both sides on the broken beak of one of the birds – it’s an old break which appears to have been re-attached with horse-hide glue. Chips to glaze at various locations on both birds which can be seen in photos. The kiln cracks in both bases appear to have been sealed with something glue-like. These are not molded birds, but are entirely hand-made pottery. They are mostly hollow and the walls are approximately 1/2 thick – you can look up inside them and see fingerprints, etc. Comments: These were found sitting on the kitchen table in a small house estate sale within the first few years of me starting my antique dealer phase – so I’ve owned them for at least 32 years. If I ever did get to attend Antiques Road Show, these would have been among my first choices to bring in for evaluation, but that didn’t happen, and I’ve never had them appraised. I have never found anything quite like them, and can’t absolutely guarantee that they’re Chinese, but I’ve always appreciated them as something pretty special.
