This cockatoo figurine was manufactured by Neue Tettau, which was founded in 1904 by local salesmen and traders in Bavaria, Germany, who split off from the original facility Koniglich Tettau, which had been operating since 1794. One of the founding members was Bernhard Gerold. Unlike the parent company, Neue Tettau specifically set out to dominate the global export market for decorative art, specializing heavily in whimsical porcelain animals and delicate figurines. In 1923, the factory restructured into a stock corporation, officially operating under the name Neue Porzellanfabrik Tetau A. During this interwar period, German porcelain makers were heavily influenced by the Art Deco movement. The factory hired elite master painters and modellers to complete with legendary animal figurine producers like Karl Ens and Rosenthal. They perfected a style of highly-polished, liquid-looking glazes applied with airbrushed color gradients – exactly like the soft pink, violet, and yellow transitions seen in this cockatoo.
